Instead of Yama or Tomoe Sushi, try Ushi Wakamaru

The last thing you’d expect from Ushi Wakamaru (136 W Houston St between MacDougal and Sullivan Sts, 212-228-4181)—a narrow, nondescript sushi bar on a generic stretch of Houston Street—is a chef who cures mackerel in house and offers rarities like shiro ebi, tiny shrimp the size of grains of rice. The portions may be smaller than those infamous slabs at Yama, but Hideo Kurihara’s ingredients are hugely impressive. And his prices stay as low as at the nearby (and inferior) Tomoe Sushi.
